Approaching the Unspeakable

The violence of global conflicts and disasters leaves physical scars on the one hand, and on the other hand, experiences of the unbearable and unspeakable in those affected, who are exposed to further forms of violence while fleeing and in their country of arrival. These experiences become woven into the reference society as a new element. The latter—without a current migration or refugee background—lacks the experience, imagination, and tools to deal with this.
On the occasion of the exhibition Refaire le Monde at the Helmhaus in 2018, the Club La Fafa (French slang for ‘the family’) was founded to explore coexistence between people with and without a current migration history through relational aesthetics and improvisational practices. Early on, members expressed the need to write down their stories and present them to the general public as testimony.
In a process lasting six years, the experiences of Ali, Attal, and ███████ were recorded, processed, and given a form that can now be experienced at Kupper Modern. Raphael’s family history is also part of this. Because the idea that we have nothing to do with violence that is distant in time or geography is wrong. Rather, it directly and indirectly influences and shapes our lives.
The exhibition is an invitation to engage with socially engaged art and to actively shape our society. Just as the three protagonists had to position themselves in their countries of origin, so must we.

Annäherung an das Unaussprechliche

Die Gewalt der weltweiten Konflikte und Katastrophen hinterlässt einerseits physische Spuren, andererseits Erfahrungen des Unterträglichen und Unaussprechbaren bei Betroffenen, die auf der Flucht und im Ankunftsland weiterer Formen der Gewalt ausgesetzt sind. Diese Erfahrungen weben sich als neues Element in die Referenzgesellschaft ein, der – ohne aktuellen Migrations- oder Fluchthintergrund – die Erfahrung, die Vorstellungskraft und die Werkzeuge für einen Umgang damit fehlt.
Anlässlich der Ausstellung Refaire le Monde im Helmhaus 2018 wurde der Club La Fafa (franz. ugs. ‘die Familie’) gegründet, um mittels relationaler Ästhetik und improvisatorischer Praktiken ein Zusammenleben von Personen mit und ohne aktueller Migrationsgeschichte zu erproben. Schon früh äusserten Mitglieder das Bedürfnis ihre Geschichten niederzuschreiben und der Allgemeinheit als Zeugenschaft vorzulegen.
In einem sechs Jahre dauernden Prozess wurden die Erlebnisse von Ali, Attal und ███████ aufgezeichnet, verarbeitet und haben eine Form gefunden, die nun bei Kupper Modern zu erleben ist. Auch die Familiengeschichte von Raphael ist Teil davon. Denn die Vorstellung, dass wir mit all der zeitlich oder geografisch entfernten Gewalt nichts zu tun haben ist falsch. Vielmehr beeinflusst und formt sie direkt und indirekt unsere Lebenswelt.
Die Ausstellung ist eine Einladung, mittels sozial engagierter Kunst in Beziehung zu treten und unsere Gesellschaft aktiv mitzugestalten. So, wie sich die drei Protagonisten in ihren Herkunftsländern positionieren mussten, müssen auch wir das tun.
